Four Reasons For A Vibrating Car

Vibrations shaking your vehicle are a common symptom of several different types of underlying mechanical problems. Understanding some of the most common reasons why your car may be shaking can help you narrow down the possibilities to help expedite your mechanic's repair work.

Steering Issues

One of the most common reasons why your car may be shaking while you drive is if there is an issue with the power steering system. Leaking power steering fluid can affect how well your steering wheel is able to turn the wheels and can lead to shaking when you change directions with your vehicle. A mechanic will be able to patch the leaks and refill the fluid to get everything working properly again.

Tire Issues

Another common reason why your vehicle may be shaking, especially if the vibrations seem to be coming up through the floor of your car and get worse while travelling at higher speeds, is because of an alignment issue with your tires. Misaligned tires may be pulling in different directions from one another, which can place undue stress on your vehicle's axles and suspension system and lead to the vibrations that you are feeling. Having your tires realigned is a relatively simple and inexpensive procedure that can save you money on extensive repairs down the road.

Brake Issues

An additional reason why you may be experiencing vibrations while driving may be because of excessive wear to your brake pads or to a stuck brake caliper. If the brake pads are to blame, you will only experience vibrations when you press the brake pedal down. You may also notice a squealing sound and find that you have to put more effort into pressing the pedal to actually slow your vehicle down. However, if the caliper is stuck, you will feel vibrations consistently throughout the vehicle even when you are not braking, which can get worse while traveling at higher speeds.

Engine Issues

Finally, one last thing to consider when faced with chronic vehicle vibrations is the engine. If some of the components within the engine are not working properly or are reaching the end of their lifespan, you may feel severe vibrations throughout your vehicle while accelerating. Most commonly, spark plugs that need to be replaced or a clogged air filter can alter how well your engine is able to burn fuel, leading to shaking as well as reduced fuel efficiency.
